I understand all too well that being accused of a crime is incredibly isolating. In an instant, and out of nowhere, your world can fall apart, often in a manner that is incredibly traumatising. Some try to keep it to themselves, others choose to navigate telling friends/family, knowing they may/will be judged and potenitally ostracized, often losing careers, friends and relationships in the process.

The reality is the police and criminal justice system more broadly, unfortunately, have no incentive to meaningfully take into account the welfare of those accused of a crime, falsly or otherwise. The whole process is incredibly invasive and can make you feel smothered and scrutinised but also completely worthless and invisible. Ultimately, you are no longer treated like a person, you are treated like a concept; a criminal, a former friend, an object of sympathy, pity or confusion. And on top of that, while the police conduct their investigation or the courts wait to try your case, you are stuck, stuck in a pressure cooker from which there is no escape, and very little meaningful help. It's an endless cycle of harrassment and humiliation.
